Does Wedding Cost Determine Marital Success?

wedding

There was a story recently on Big Think that reported that expensive weddings result in shorter marriages. The idea being that the more money you spend on your wedding, the more likely you are to not only have it end in divorce, but the faster the divorce will occur. This report was based on an economics study by professors at Emory University who also found expensive engagement rings were a warning sign that the marriage would dissolve faster.

Here are the basic results:

– Spend between $2 and $4k on a ring and you’re 1.3 times more likely to get divorced than couples who only spend between $500 and $2,000.

– Spend more than $20k on your wedding and you’re 3.5 times more likely to get divorced than couples who only spend between $ 5,000 and $10,000.

What is it that causes these marriages to end in divorce so much faster? Perhaps it’s that the weddings were based more on a splashy display of affection than grounded in real love. Or maybe it could be that spending all that money puts a serious financial strain on the two of you causing the beginning of your marriage to start with fights about money. Whatever the reasons behind the results, it definitely makes a destination wedding sound a whole lot better.

Why? Destination weddings are significantly cheaper than traditional weddings! Are we saying that if you have a destination wedding you are not going to have your marriage end in divorce? Of course not! We’re wedding planners, not counselors, and the success of your marriage ultimately depends on you and your spouse. However, if you are looking to have less of a financial burden as the two of you become man and wife, we can attest that a destination wedding may be the best option for you!
