How to Pick the Right Wedding Photographer

12.5.14- Destination Weddings- Wedding PhotographerOne of the most important vendors to choose for your wedding is your photographer because they will be capturing the memories you will be making. How do you pick the right one though? Here are a few things to consider when trying to choose yours:

– Style:  Do you want artistic photos? Perhaps you would prefer candid shots. Or maybe you would like a combination of both. You should look at several different styles to see which one appeals to you. Once you decide on the style that is right for you start researching the photographers out there that work in that fashion.

– Cost: Determine your budget and look at the packages different photographers offer. You need to keep in mind that if they have to travel to your wedding there will be a travel fee imposed. This fee may vary.

– Availability for travel or proximity to your destination: If you got lucky enough to find a photographer in the area of your wedding then you won’t have to pay them a travel fee. However, if they aren’t local to your wedding location you’ll need to see if they are willing to travel and what they charge for traveling. If they won’t travel or their travel fee is too high you will have to do more research for other photographers.

– Check out reviews: Be sure to look at reviews of photography companies you are considering. See if they have negative comments on social media. Look them up on the Better Business Bureau, Yelp, and other sites to see if they have negative or positive reviews.

– Interview time: Once you have between three and five photographers in mind you’ll need to interview them. They may have the exact style you want but might not be available for your wedding day or they charge rates you are willing to pay but your personalities don’t mesh well.

Questions to ask when interviewing include:

  • What equipment do you shoot with?
  • What are my rights with the photos? i.e. Can I have a CD of the images to make prints from?
  • How long will it be until we receive our photos?
  • Do you put the images online for friends and family to view?

– Sign your contract and pay up: Expect to put down a significant non-refundable deposit for booking your date. At this point, the photographer should be yours!
